Rule 1: Forecast the route, not the destination

The most common summer mistake is checking the weather where the customer lives. Your package doesn't teleport there. A shipment from a Vermont kitchen to a San Diego doorstep might cross a Kentucky sort hub at 96°F and ride a Nevada linehaul at 105°F before arriving in 72°F coastal air. The destination forecast said "safe." The route said otherwise.

Before releasing summer orders, check three points: your origin, the carrier's likely regional hub (your tracking history tells you which hubs your lanes use), and the destination. Take the highest of the three highs across the transit window and make your packaging decision on that number. Rule 2: Ship Monday through Wednesday. No exceptions in summer.

This is the cheapest risk reduction available to any chocolate brand, and it costs nothing but discipline. The logic: carriers don't deliver most residential ground packages on Sunday, and many warehouses and trailers are unconditioned. A package that ships Thursday on 2-day service and slips one day — which happens constantly in peak summer — arrives at a local facility Saturday and sits until Monday. Rule 3: Two days is the maximum transit

Do the math on what the upgrade actually buys. The step from ground to 2-day service costs a few dollars on most parcels. Two cautions. First, tier by route: a "lower tier" Seattle order that transits a Sacramento hub in a heat wave is not a lower-tier shipment that week. Second, lower-tier lanes carry their own failure mode — over-chilling. Rule 4: Size the refrigerant to the heat

In summer, the working rule for a 48-hour window is roughly 1 lb of gel pack per 2–3 lb of chocolate inside an insulated container, moving toward 1 lb per 2 lb as route highs pass 85°F. Validate your lanes before peak — with $10 loggers

Every rule above is a starting point. Your product mass, your pack-out, and your lanes are specific, and the only way to know your real performance envelope is to measure it. Single-use temperature loggers run roughly $10–20 each. The protocol:

  1. In late spring, pack a normal order with a logger inside, positioned next to the product (not against the gel pack).

At 95°F+ most brands should pause the affected lanes for a few days, offer local pickup where possible, or ship overnight with an explicit heat advisory and hold-at-location delivery. At sustained 105°F+ — a normal week in the desert Southwest — pausing is simply the correct call, and customers respect a brand that says "we're holding your order until the heat breaks" far more than one that delivers soup.
